On Sunday, September 18, Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico with winds of 86 mph (140 km/h). Parts of the island received two feet of rain in 24 hours and several more inches of rain are expected. This caused mudslides, landslides and flash flooding, and there is a risk of more. There is catastrophic damage to roads and bridges. The hurricane knocked out power for the entire island and it may take days to restore it for many.
Puerto Rico is still recovering from the devastation of previous storms. Fiona struck the island a few days before the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Maria, a category five hurricane. This is another crisis for a people that fought to rebuild after Maria caused nearly 3,000 deaths. The dedicated work of organizations helping Puerto Rico are as important as ever.
