Flooding in Afghanistan Response

par International Medical Corps

Significant rainfall on May 10th and 11th resulted in devastating floods that struck Badakhshan, Baghlan and Takhar provinces in Afghanistan, affecting Baghlan Markazi, Burka and Nahrin districts, and Pulikhumri city. Reports and assessments indicate that the floods have displaced more than 5,000 families, killed almost 350 people and injured more than 1,650. The flooding damaged or destroyed about 7,800 houses as well as important infrastructure, including roads, bridges, health facilities, agricultural lands and public schools.

Several health facilities have also been affected by the floods and reported as non-operational. Meanwhile, increased cases of waterborne illnesses—such as diarrhea and skin infections—have been reported in affected areas.

The emergency response team of International Medical Corps is working closely with ANDMA, IOM, the Health Cluster, WHO and other humanitarian partners to coordinate the humanitarian aid distribution in affected districts. International Medical Corps also has participated in meetings held by the Operational Coordination Team (OCT), the
Provincial Public Health Directorate, the Provincial Disaster Management Committee and the Directorate of Economy, focusing on coordinating joint assessment efforts and response.

Please help communities affected by the flooding in Afghanistan by supporting this project.
