Emergency Shelter Wilmington Delaware
The Salvation Army Emergency Housing operates by these principles: Core Services that are accessible and client focused; transparent and accountable operations; safe, secure and welcoming environment; collaboration among support providers to improve service effectiveness. The Salvation Army provides a safe shelter without which women and children would be sleeping in areas unfit for human habitation.
Our targeted population is single women and women with children who are homeless and low income living in New Castle County. The Salvation Army Emergency Residence, in continuous operation since 1947, provides 30-day emergency housing for women and children who are homeless. Residents are granted extension up to two to four weeks depending on their case circumstances. We continue to operate as an emergency shelter whereby consumers are admitted into the shelter immediately, as long as there is availability of bed space. The Emergency Housing Residence consists of 52 beds in 13 rooms on two residential floors. The shelter operates 24/7, 365 days a year.
Social Services Wilmington, Dover and Sussex
Provides assistance to those in need in various ways including financial, spiritual and assistance in looking for shelter and employment. Over $300,000 in assistance was granted with over 27,000 individuals served state wide. In addition over 10,000 donated gifts were distributed during the Christmas season.
Senior Center Wilmington DE
Senior’s needs are addressed in a variety of opportunities through programs, activities, services, educational sessions and formal and informal social gatherings.
The Center is open daily. No programs are scheduled for the weekend. There are minimum fees for meals, local trips, and annual membership dues.
The Center's daily services are breakfast, lunch, transportation and activities. Other needed services such as banking, pharmacy Dr. visits, and other appointments by requests are weekly and/or monthly. Other needed services include monthly health screenings, health care, health education, food nutrition and medication information. Seniors do outreach visits monthly for other seniors and disabled persons to bring them special activities and peer relationships. Seniors are involved in an ongoing partner relationship with R.S. V.P. volunteer program which offers many opportunities to learn new skills share their talents as well as fulfilling needs in our community and for self enhancement. Seniors keep active and mobile with our walking, fitness training and chair exercise programs daily and weekly. Seniors stay involved and connected by socializing, making friends; they gain a sense of belonging through daily activities like games, crafts, volunteering, parties, special events and special occasions. Over 400 seniors were served by the center in the past year
Community Center, Wilmington DE
The targeted population is the at-risk youth of the Wilmington area. The central location, facility, staffing and budget has allowed us to meet their needs through our various programs. We recognize the increasing need in Wilmington to provide alternatives for our youth and to give them the tools for success. Over 400 youth were served in the past year.
Child Care, Wilmington DE
Provides subsidized child care to families from infant to school age along with preschool and afterschool care. Also provide many day camp opportunities along with our onsite playground and gymnasium.
All our teachers are working towards a Credential in the age group they work in. Six of our staff achieved their age appropriate credential and the Director has an Administrative Credential. We have achieved Star level 4 and working towards Star 5. Parents are more aware of the importance of the Stars program and the quality of services we provide. Parents are more open to family activities set up and participate in activities.
Children leaving our program for Kindergarten have been very successful in surpassing the expectations of the public, private and charter schools. This information is shared by the parents as well as discussions with Kindergarten teachers. Our school age children have had success by passing on to the next grade level. Added help with homework and added work has helped to increase their skills. Over 200 children attended this past year.
Keep a Job program Wilmington DE
The Keep a Job program addresses the needs of current and former welfare recipients who are employed yet still transitioning to self-sufficiency. The Salvation Army serves over 300 customers a year helping each maintain employment and meet his/her individual personal, educational and career goals. The population is dynamic and faces a variety of barriers to academic and employment success. Therefore, the program encompasses an equally large variety of services. The program provides: intensive case management, crisis alleviation services, comprehensive life guidance, employment counseling and job placement. In addition, the program rewards participants for employment retention and program progress.
We have been able to remain in the forefront through creative programming and the experience of highly skilled staff dedicated to the mission that all customers in the Salvation Army Keep a Job program will achieve their full career potential through high-quality, fully satisfying jobs and will provide Delaware ’s employers with a competitive workforce.
Our performance, experience and learning over the last fifteen years providing Keep A Job services, our geographic posture, our record of over 100 years of service to the low income community in Delaware, our trusted name within this community, and a ceaseless commitment to meeting the needs of our clientele all give The Salvation Army a distinct advantage over other Keep a Job products that will be fully applied. We have been the only Keep a Job provider in New Castle County the past seven years. This year a new RFP was distributed and we were again awarded the contract after a lengthy bid process.
