CARE Mandalay, Myanmar Earthquake Response

, CARE

On March 28, a deadly earthquake and strong aftershock occurred near Mandalay, Myanmar, affecting an estimated 6.1 million people. In response, CARE's team in Myanmar has launched a rapid humanitarian assessment and an initial response with immediate cash assistance, water, sanitation, and hygiene services, food and nutrition support, shelter, health, and protection services for women and girls. As of today, we estimate reaching 500,000 people through this initial response.

We are prioritizing the following activities to reach an estimated 500,000 people most in need in Myanmar, with a focus on Mandalay, Naypyitaw, Sagaing, Bago region, and Shan state.

· Multi-purpose cash assistance: In times of crisis, multi-purpose cash assistance provides flexibility to families so they can purchase items that meet their specific needs. Cash assistance is efficient, quick, and gives families the freedom to choose, so they can start to restore stability in their lives on their own terms.

· Water and sanitation: Immediate needs include clean drinking water, hygiene materials, emergency latrines, and repair of damaged water systems. CARE’s initial focus is on restoring water access, distributing hygiene kits, and delivering hygiene awareness to reduce the risk of disease from contaminated water.

· Food security and nutrition: People who have lost their homes urgently need food, especially non-perishable items such as canned goods and ready-to-eat meals. Pregnant women, new mothers, and young children also need nutritional support. CARE’s initial response will provide a food and nutrition package.

· Shelter and other household items: To support families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed, CARE will provide emergency shelter kits and other essential items, such as clothing, to provide immediate relief and protection from harsh weather.

· Health care: In addition to immediate medical care for injured people, communities also need medical supplies and equipment for damaged or destroyed health centers. CARE’s response will prioritize essential health care services and health education.

· Protection: Disasters often increase risks for women and girls, such as exploitation and violence. By providing dignity kits and raising awareness about violence prevention, CARE aims to protect women and children, thus ensuring their safety and dignity.

To support the relief efforts, CARE has created the Myanmar Earthquake Response Fund, with an initial $10 million goal. In addition, we are also closely monitoring the situation in Thailand and stand ready to respond as needed.
